The Broad Summer Research Program (BSRP) 2026 offers an exceptional nine-week research experience for undergraduate students who are passionate about biomedical sciences and eager to explore the rapidly evolving world of genomics. Designed for students committed to pursuing advanced scientific study, this highly competitive summer program provides hands-on research training, academic development, and exposure to real-world scientific environments. With its strong track record of supporting rising researchers, BSRP continues to empower students as they prepare for graduate school and future careers in science.
About the Broad Summer Research Program (BSRP)
BSRP is an immersive summer initiative aimed at helping undergraduates build foundational and advanced research skills. Throughout the nine weeks, students engage in independent, cutting-edge research projects—either computational or experimental—across various labs aligned with Broad’s major research areas. These fields include cancer biology, infectious disease, computational biology, and other biomedical disciplines.
Participants work directly under the mentorship of leading scientists, gaining invaluable experience in research design, data analysis, and scientific inquiry. By the end of the program, each student presents their research findings through both oral presentations and poster sessions, demonstrating what they have learned and accomplished during the summer.
Beyond lab work, BSRP incorporates a robust and enriching curriculum designed to develop professional and academic skills. The program places strong emphasis on scientific communication, collaborative problem-solving, and navigating graduate school pathways. Students benefit from a variety of workshops, seminars, and teamwork activities that prepare them for long-term success in the scientific community.
Key academic features include:
• A specialized scientific communication course that strengthens writing, public speaking, and presentation skills
• Seminars hosted by renowned faculty from Harvard University and MIT
• Weekly workshops focused on graduate school applications, personal development, and career readiness
This holistic training approach enables students to grow both as researchers and as future leaders in science.
Benefits
Participants selected for the Broad Summer Research Program receive a generous support package to ensure they can fully immerse themselves in research without financial burden. The benefits include:
• $5,400 stipend for the nine-week duration
• Free housing provided through partner university accommodation facilities
• Round-trip air or ground travel to and from Boston
• Sponsorship to attend a national scientific conference and present summer research
• Direct mentorship from world-class scientists across Broad’s interdisciplinary labs
• Access to academic and career development seminars
• Participation in an intensive scientific communication course
• Engaging team-building and social activities in Boston, a historic and vibrant scientific hub
These benefits ensure an enriching and supportive research environment, while also fostering community among passionate young scientists.
Eligibility
The BSRP 2026 is designed for undergraduate students who demonstrate strong academic ability, scientific curiosity, and a desire to pursue graduate study in biomedical research. To be considered, applicants must meet the requirements outlined below.
General Availability Requirement
Students must be fully available for the entire nine-week duration of the program. While some academic or personal obligations may be excused with advance notice, participants cannot enroll in other courses, academic programs, test prep courses (e.g., MCAT), or hold outside employment during the program. If necessary, conflicting exams may be proctored at the Broad.
Applicant Criteria
To qualify for the Broad Summer Research Program, applicants must:
• Demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing graduate school (Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D.)
• Be enrolled in a four-year U.S. college or university for Fall 2025
• Have an anticipated graduation date of December 2026 or later
• Be majoring in physical sciences, biological sciences, computer science, engineering, or mathematics
• Hold a minimum GPA of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale)
• Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or non-citizen with valid employment authorization
Previous research experience is not required, making the program accessible to motivated students who may not have had opportunities in STEM. Applicants with limited exposure to scientific research are strongly encouraged to apply, particularly those from groups historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines.
Application Requirements
All applicants must complete and submit a full application package to be considered for BSRP 2026. Required materials include:
• Online application form
• Unofficial transcript(s) from all institutions attended
• A detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV) or résumé
• Short essay responses addressing academic interests, research motivation, and career goals
• Two letters of recommendation
Since the program is full-time, applicants should ensure they have no conflicting summer commitments. Only students who can dedicate their full effort to the program will be considered.
