Roberta Julian Scholarship for Sociology and Criminology

The Scholarship was established in honour of Emeritus Professor Roberta Julian PhD, Founding Director of the Tasmanian Institute of Law Enforcement Studies at the University of Tasmania. The scholarship receives donations from Kate Hodgson, an Alumna and former scholarship recipient who wanted to give back to the society and to show appreciation for Professor Julian’s generous and unwavering enthusiasm for supervising Masters by Research (MRes) and PhD students. Kate feels Professor Julian’s passion for teaching and research is infectious and could propel even the most hesitant among us to find excitement and gain confidence in intellectually probing societal puzzles.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this scholarship you must be:

  • A Masters by Research (MRes) or PhD candidate who has been offered or awarded a base stipend at the University rate
  • A student who has been offered admission either for full-time or part-time study.
  • Student whose research project is in the area of sociology or criminology; and,
  • A student who has shown proof of financial, educational, geographical, societal, and/or historical disadvantage, and describe how this scholarship will assist them with their research.

Selection Process

The Scholarship selection process will be approved and monitored by the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Graduate Research (PVCGR) or delegate, in accordance with to the eligibility criteria.

Scholarship Duration 

The Scholarship is will be for the duration of the student’s course of study. The duration of the Scholarship will be reduced by any periods of study undertaken:

Required Documents

Successful applicants are required to submit a thank you letter between 6-12 months of accepting the scholarship, and then every 6-12 months for the remainder of the scholarship support.
